Walgreens June Sales Increase 6.8 Percent

DEERFIELD, Ill., July 6, 2011 - Walgreens (NYSE: WAG) (NASDAQ: WAG) had June sales of $6.04 billion, an increase of 6.8 percent from $5.65 billion for the same month in 2010.

Total front-end sales increased 6.4 percent in June, while comparable store front-end sales increased 4.7 percent. Customer traffic in comparable stores increased 1.3 percent and basket size increased 3.4 percent.

Prescriptions filled at comparable stores increased 5.0 percent in June. Calendar day shifts positively impacted prescriptions filled in comparable stores by 0.3 percentage point.

June pharmacy sales increased 6.2 percent, while comparable pharmacy sales increased 4.9 percent. Calendar day shifts positively impacted pharmacy sales in comparable stores by 0.3 percentage point. Comparable pharmacy sales were negatively impacted by 2.1 percentage points due to generic drug introductions in the last 12 months. Pharmacy sales accounted for 65.6 percent of total sales for the month.

Sales in comparable stores (those open at least a year) increased 4.8 percent. The effect of calendar day shifts positively impacted total comparable sales by 0.2 percentage point.

Calendar year-to-date sales were $36.11 billion, an increase of 7.8 percent from $33.50 billion in 2010.

Fiscal 2011 year-to-date sales for the ten months were $60.25 billion, up 7.2 percent from $56.20 billion in fiscal 2010.

Walgreens opened 15 stores during June, including two relocations, acquired seven stores and closed one for a net increase of 19 stores in the month.

At June 30, Walgreens operated 8,184 locations in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam. That includes 7,733 drugstores, 192 more than a year ago, including 29 stores acquired over the last 12 months, and the company also operates worksite health and wellness centers, home care facilities and specialty and mail service pharmacies. Its Take Care Health Systems subsidiary manages more than 700 in-store convenient care clinics and worksite health and wellness centers.

Note that this year’s July will have one additional Sunday and one fewer Thursday compared with July 2010 which will negatively impact comparable pharmacy sales and prescriptions filled.
