Walgreens July Sales Increase 4.7 Percent

DEERFIELD, Ill., Aug. 3, 2011 - Walgreens (NYSE: WAG) (NASDAQ: WAG) had July sales of $5.82 billion, an increase of 4.7 percent from $5.56 billion for the same month in 2010.

Total front-end sales increased 6.8 percent in July, while comparable store front-end sales increased 4.8 percent. Customer traffic in comparable stores increased 1.4 percent and basket size increased 3.4 percent.

Prescriptions filled at comparable stores increased 1.3 percent in July. Calendar day shifts in July, which had one additional Sunday and one fewer Thursday compared with July 2010, negatively impacted prescriptions filled in comparable stores by 2.2 percentage points.

July pharmacy sales increased 2.7 percent, while comparable pharmacy sales increased 1.5 percent. Calendar day shifts negatively impacted pharmacy sales in comparable stores by 2.2 percentage points. Comparable pharmacy sales were also negatively impacted by 1.9 percentage points due to generic drug introductions in the last 12 months. Pharmacy sales accounted for 64.5 percent of total sales for the month.

Sales in comparable stores (those open at least a year) increased 2.7 percent. The effect of calendar day shifts negatively impacted total comparable sales by 1.4 percentage points.

Calendar year-to-date sales were $41.93 billion, an increase of 7.3 percent from $39.06 billion in 2010.

Fiscal 2011 year-to-date sales for the 11 months were $66.07 billion, up 7.0 percent from $61.76 billion in fiscal 2010.

Walgreens opened 13 stores during July, including three relocations, and closed one for a net increase of nine in the month.

At July 31, Walgreens operated 8,195 locations in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam. That includes 7,742 drugstores, 198 more than a year ago, including 29 stores acquired over the last 12 months. The company also operates home care facilities and specialty and mail service pharmacies. Its Take Care Health Systems subsidiary manages more than 700 in-store convenient care clinics and worksite health and wellness centers.

Note that this year’s August has one additional Wednesday and one fewer Sunday compared with August 2010 which is expected to positively impact comparable pharmacy sales and prescriptions filled.
