It’s National Lipstick Day, and Walgreens is offering insights on trendy looks, fun colors and innovative product combinations. Nostalgic styles are in, inspired by today’s pop culture shows and celebrities, with countless options at great prices.
Allison Dowling, Walgreens associate category manager for cosmetics, shares the latest lipstick trends, and Laura Catron, a Fort Worth, Texas Walgreens beauty area expert, offers tips on how to bring out the best in your lips, while both make recommendations on lipstick products that can help you achieve the hottest looks.
Trend: Gloss. “High shine is in and fits with the ‘no makeup’ look and ‘glazed donut’ trend made popular by Hailey Bieber, an easily achieved look with simple application that everyone can execute,” says Dowling. “In coordination with this trend, the popularity of lip oils is on the rise as people are seeking a fully hydrated, healthy glow.”
Tip: “For the glossy natural look, start with a nude lip liner that is just slightly darker, or more on the brown side of your skin tone,” says Catron. “Blend the liner into the lip for a contoured look, then add a clear gloss or one with a bronze tint on top for a just-woke-up glow.”
Products to give you the look:
Trend: Y2K. Dowling says metallic, frosted lips are a nod to the early 2000s and the popular Euphoria HBO series for perfect back-to-the-millennium nostalgia.
Tip: “To make the metallic look yours, take your favorite lipstick, pair it with a great lip gloss and add shimmer shadow to it,” says Catron.
Products to give you the look:
Trend: ’90s vibes with bold lip liner. “Use shades that are two or more shades darker than the lipstick (usually a nude color) and highlight the lips with a defined outline, finishing with a clear gloss to achieve that throwback look,” says Dowling.
Tip: “The key to a great ’90s look is sticking with muted mauves,” says Catron. “And I like to give it a new-age spin by adding an ombre feel by taking a deeper tone of lip liner and adding an overline effect by following your natural lip line and going just a bit outside the line on the Cupid's bow and bottom lip for the perfect pout.”
Products to give you the look:
Trend: Classic red. “Again drawing on nostalgia, summer reds are generally being worn in matte forms to channel the iconic ’90s supermodel look,” says Dowling.
Tip: “The key to a great red lipstick is pairing it with lip liner to give you a sharp line. Put your red lipstick on first and then apply your liner over it. That's what's going to get that very clean look like you would see on the runway,” says Catron. “So many people get scared of red, but remember this is lipstick, not a tattoo, so have fun with it. What better time to rock red lips than when it’s trending?”
