“A caring person who goes above and beyond for coworkers and patients.” “Someone who’s going to find a solution, no matter what it takes.” “Someone who puts her whole heart into everything.”

That is how colleagues describe specialty pharmacist Renee Guthrie, who prides herself on providing compassionate care to patients in her Kansas City, Missouri, community.

Recently named as the inaugural recipient of the Act of Heroism award in Walgreens’ Champion of Champions award program, Guthrie’s empathy is a pillar of her work. It’s a quality she embodied when she became a lifeline for a teen patient experiencing a crisis last year.

“I think empathy comes and changes so much as you grow, learn and change, and it comes from the people you meet” says Guthrie. “You can’t not bring that to work every day.”
