DEERFIELD, Ill., October 27, 2022 – Walgreens is leading the fight against prescription drug abuse with programs to help curb the misuse of medications and reduce the rise in overdose deaths, and will once again participate in the National Prescription Drug Take Back Day to be held on Saturday, October 29, 2022.
With nearly 9,000 retail pharmacy locations throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico, Walgreens has nearly 1,500 participating kiosk locations across 46 states including Washington, DC. These collection kiosks will accept unwanted, unused, and expired medications that will then be safely disposed of via a DEA registered incineration facility. Since the inception of its safe medication disposal program in 2016, Walgreens has collected and properly disposed of 3.1 million pounds, or 1,550 tons, of unwanted or unused patient medication.
Through a collaboration with Google, Walgreens locations with drug disposal options can quickly and easily be found by searching for ’drug drop off near me’ or ‘medication disposal near me,’ in Google or Google Maps. Kiosk locations can also be found via the Walgreens.com Store Locator filter for ‘Medication Disposal.’ Walgreens safe medication disposal kiosks provide a convenient way to dispose of unwanted, unused or expired medication at no cost, year-round. Kiosks are available during regular pharmacy hours and offer one of the best ways to ensure medications are not accidentally used or intentionally misused by someone else. All Walgreens pharmacies without safe medication disposal kiosks offer DisposeRx or other drug disposal options free of charge, available year-round upon request at the pharmacy counter. Both programs make the disposal of medications —— easier and more convenient.
