Walgreens March Sales Increase 7.6 Percent

DEERFIELD, Ill., April 05, 2011 - Walgreens (NYSE: WAG)(NASDAQ: WAG) had March sales of $6.28 billion, an increase of 7.6 percent from $5.83 billion for the same month in 2010. Duane Reade stores, acquired in April 2010, contributed 2.8 percentage points to the total sales increase for the month.

Total front-end sales increased 8.4 percent in March, including 4.7 percentage points from Duane Reade stores. Despite the negative impact of this year’s later Easter, which falls on April 24 this year compared with April 4 last year, comparable store front-end sales increased 1.6 percent. Customer traffic in comparable stores increased 0.8 percent, while basket size increased 0.8 percent.

Prescriptions filled at comparable stores increased 3.5 percent in March. Calendar day shifts negatively impacted prescriptions filled in comparable stores by 0.9 percentage point.

March pharmacy sales increased 7.3 percent, while comparable pharmacy sales increased 3.7 percent. Comparable pharmacy sales were negatively impacted by 2.3 percentage points due to generic drug introductions in the last 12 months. Pharmacy sales accounted for 66.4 percent of total sales for the month.

Sales in comparable stores (those open at least a year) for the month increased 3.0 percent. Duane Reade stores are not included in any comparable store results. The company will report combined comparable store sales for March and April with its April sales results.

Calendar year-to-date sales were $17.98 billion, an increase of 9.1 percent from $16.48 billion in 2010.

Fiscal 2011 year-to-date sales for the first seven months were $42.12 billion, up 7.5 percent from $39.18 billion in fiscal 2010.

Walgreens opened 12 stores during March, including three relocations, acquired one store and closed two.

At March 31, Walgreens operated 8,169 locations in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and Guam. That includes 7,697 drugstores, 472 more than a year ago, including 285 stores acquired over the last 12 months. The company also operates worksite health centers, home care facilities, and specialty and mail service pharmacies. Its Take Care Health Systems subsidiary manages more than 700 in-store convenient care clinics and worksite health and wellness centers. Franchisees of Option Care, Inc., a wholly-owned subsidiary of Walgreens, are not included in Walgreens location or store count.
