Walgreens pharmacist Kelly Kreider vaccinates anchor Savannah Guthrie live on TODAY.
Before the pandemic, the personalities on NBC’s TODAY Show were used to making their way out of the studio during tapings and onto the Plaza at Rockefeller Center, where they were met with raucous fans. But in an environment of social distancing, the TODAY team has had to get used to life without the typical Plaza crowds.
On April 7, Savannah Guthrie, Craig Melvin, Sheinelle Jones, Dylan Dreyer and Jenna Bush Hager took to the Plaza where a new crowd stood by – five local Walgreens pharmacists, who gave the COVID-19 vaccine to the anchors during a live segment.
“It’s important to publicly vaccinate well-known people like the TODAY anchors because they’re in the public eye,” says Walgreens pharmacist Chia Feng Liang, who vaccinated Dylan Dreyer. “Getting their shot on live TV will really help get the word out and goes a long way toward ending this pandemic.”
For both the pharmacists and the anchors, it was a moment of pride they’ll remember forever.
“It felt like we were doing more than just giving a shot,” says Walgreens pharmacist Jamal Downer. “It felt like we were bringing people hope that we’d be getting back to normal soon.”
